Torpa is located in the parish of Länghem on Lake Åsunden, not far from Borås in southern Västergötland province. It was a noble manor as far back as the Middle Ages. We know with certainty that Councillor Arvid Knutsson lived in Torpa in the late 15th century. He erected the old stone building that still stands in the heart of the manor, despite many additions and renovations over the years.

Torpa Stenhus is one of our best-preserved Renaissance manors, with roots in the Middle Ages. The oldest part of the building is from the 15th century, but the stone building we see today is more 16th century.

During the restoration a few years ago, remnants were found of buildings from a much earlier date. The most recent extensive renovation project was the chapel, a project initiated by the widow Christina de la Gardie. The chapel was consecrated in 1699.

In its excellent condition, the Torpa Stenhus is a noteworthy building but its owners history is even stranger. With only one exception, in the early 15th century, Torpa has never changed hands except through inheritance. The crown confiscated Torpa in about 1600, but it was returned to the family in 1603.

Naturally, a Renaissance castle and a mediaeval fortress bears its share of legends. Shadows of the past flit by in silence, but the Torpa guides have much to say about them. Listen to their tales and feel the wings of history tickle your fancy an experience youll bear with you for a long, long time.
